This week will be busy as we continue to get ready for Biztown. Please remember to send in money and permission slip by Tuesday. If you would like to help with this field trip, please mark that on the permission slip as well.
Our first class party will be this Wednesday at 2:30. If you would like to help with it, please contact Mrs. Walrich.
This week will not be reading a reading story, however, we will be practicing on the Acuity website and reading Time For Kids. We will not have a spelling list this week. In writing, we will finish our fairy tales. For math, we will begin chapter 6. At the beginning of the chapter we will focus of gathering data and organizing it.

Classroom Update 9/26

This week is busy! Today we are taking a test called Aquity. This test will cover math. Next week, students will take Aquity reading. This test is computer based and has 30 questions. Students are not limited on the amount of time they have to complete the test. We also have a character ed. lesson this week with Mrs. Kraus. The Book Fair is going on in the media center. Students were able to go to the book fair today to look and purchase items. If students forgot their money, they may bring in money on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday to shop.

We are continuing on in chapter 3 for math. We will have a new lesson each day this week, then finish up the chapter late next week.

We are reading Folk Tales from Asia in reading this week. This story is actually three short stories combined. Each story has different characters, plot, theme, etc. Students will be able to use their reading book on their test like normal, but an attention to detail will be especially important this week.

Today we are beginning our study of the southeast region of the US. Students will be labeling a new map to study. The new map will include the northeast region and the southeast region. Students will be quizzed over both sections.

Dog Jog money is due by Wednesday!

Classroom Update 9/13/11

The weeks are going so quickly! I can't believe that it is already the second week of September. We have been really busy in our room and it doesn't look like it is going to slow down!

This week in reading we will be reading Elena. We will begin reading Elena tomorrow. On Monday and Tuesday students read mini books with partners. The students also heard about the Young Hoosier book club for this year. Students need to read 5 books from the Young Hoosier book club list by the end of the year if they want to participate. We've already read one (Mudshark) as a class. We are also almost finished with our novel, The Best School Year Ever. Students will be able to take a Reading Counts quiz over this novel.

We are finished up chapter two in math. This week we have focused on multiplication and estimating. We will test next week over chapter two. We will also pre-test over chapter three next week.

We have nearly completed chapter one in science regarding classifying organisms. Students will test over these concepts next week. Yesterday and today students used microscopes to look at an onion cell and a leaf cell.

We began chapter one in S.S. this week. We are also getting ready for our first map quiz. Students will work on the northeast region during the month of September. In October, we will add another region to our map. This website http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm has tons of games that would be great practice for states and capitals.

This past week flew by! We completed chapter 1 in math, nearly finished our second realistic fiction book (Mudshark), took our first health test, and the took Dibels math assessment.
This week we will be testing over math chapter 1 on Tuesday. Study guides will be sent home on Monday. We will begin chapter 2 on Wednesday.
We will be working on prefixes, suffixes, and root words in reading, along with narrative elements and comprehension. Our reading story for this week is Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family.
Our spelling list for this week will be posted later this afternoon, or it can be retrieved from spellingcity.com. We will begin writing our personal narratives this week. This is our first big writing project for the school year.
We will begin Life Science this week. Chapter 1 begins with an exploration activity and several overviews of the chapter and book. The students are excited to start this since it is a new book this year.

Weekly Update 8/18/11

Our first full week is now complete and the students are doing great! We've learned our classroom procedures for the most part and have moved on to school work.

This week we started chapter one in math. So far we covered arrays and factors and the students seem to be picking this up quickly. This week we also played Multiplication Top It on the computer with our whole class. Please encourage your child to play the games on everydaymathonline.com for practice.

In health we discussed mental and emotional health. We'll be testing over this next week on Thursday. A review will be sent home on Wednesday night.

This week in reading we read The Hot and Cold Summer. Students will be using their textbook on their reading test this year. You will also notice that they will be writing page numbers for where they find the answer to each question. Since students have access to the text on ISTEP, we figured they should have access to it on our reading tests. Students must write down the page where they found the answer so we know they are actually attempting to find the correct answer and not guessing.

In S.S. we finished up the Overview chapter and students should begin working on their overview project. Information about this project is being sent home on Friday.

This week will be taking our spelling test using paper and pencil, however, next week we will take it on the computer. Please use spellingcity.com to practice and get a spelling list. All 25 words are listed on spelling city. The lists are listed under Kristi Love. All fifth grade students from Delaware Trail use these lists.

Classroom News - 8/12/11

We've had a great three days this week! The students are doing a terrific job and this year is going to be great!
This week we've reviewed skills from 4th grade math, started the novel The Hundred Dresses, gone over rules and procedures, and done lots of getting to know you activities. The students are working well with each other and are being supportive of one another.
Next week we will begin 5th grade math, S.S., Health, Spelling, Reading, and writing. We will finish The Hundred Dresses on Monday and begin Mudshark by Gary Pulsen on Tuesday. Students will take Reading Counts quizzes over these stories and these will count towards their 40 book challenge if they pass the quiz.
Please remind your student to complete their homework each night. Students will walk 5 minutes during recess per missing or unfinished assignment.
