This past week flew by! We completed chapter 1 in math, nearly finished our second realistic fiction book (Mudshark), took our first health test, and the took Dibels math assessment.
This week we will be testing over math chapter 1 on Tuesday. Study guides will be sent home on Monday. We will begin chapter 2 on Wednesday.
We will be working on prefixes, suffixes, and root words in reading, along with narrative elements and comprehension. Our reading story for this week is Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family.
Our spelling list for this week will be posted later this afternoon, or it can be retrieved from spellingcity.com. We will begin writing our personal narratives this week. This is our first big writing project for the school year.
We will begin Life Science this week. Chapter 1 begins with an exploration activity and several overviews of the chapter and book. The students are excited to start this since it is a new book this year.

Weekly Update 8/18/11

Our first full week is now complete and the students are doing great! We've learned our classroom procedures for the most part and have moved on to school work.

This week we started chapter one in math. So far we covered arrays and factors and the students seem to be picking this up quickly. This week we also played Multiplication Top It on the computer with our whole class. Please encourage your child to play the games on everydaymathonline.com for practice.

In health we discussed mental and emotional health. We'll be testing over this next week on Thursday. A review will be sent home on Wednesday night.

This week in reading we read The Hot and Cold Summer. Students will be using their textbook on their reading test this year. You will also notice that they will be writing page numbers for where they find the answer to each question. Since students have access to the text on ISTEP, we figured they should have access to it on our reading tests. Students must write down the page where they found the answer so we know they are actually attempting to find the correct answer and not guessing.

In S.S. we finished up the Overview chapter and students should begin working on their overview project. Information about this project is being sent home on Friday.

This week will be taking our spelling test using paper and pencil, however, next week we will take it on the computer. Please use spellingcity.com to practice and get a spelling list. All 25 words are listed on spelling city. The lists are listed under Kristi Love. All fifth grade students from Delaware Trail use these lists.

Classroom News - 8/12/11

We've had a great three days this week! The students are doing a terrific job and this year is going to be great!
This week we've reviewed skills from 4th grade math, started the novel The Hundred Dresses, gone over rules and procedures, and done lots of getting to know you activities. The students are working well with each other and are being supportive of one another.
Next week we will begin 5th grade math, S.S., Health, Spelling, Reading, and writing. We will finish The Hundred Dresses on Monday and begin Mudshark by Gary Pulsen on Tuesday. Students will take Reading Counts quizzes over these stories and these will count towards their 40 book challenge if they pass the quiz.
Please remind your student to complete their homework each night. Students will walk 5 minutes during recess per missing or unfinished assignment.
